Tufail Niazi’s everlasting Main nai jaana forms the base for the incredibly sung and arranged Khairheyan de naal – Shafqat’s interpretation and vocals are truly breathtaking. Zeeshan ‘Shani’ Haider’s sole composition, Naina, lays out its full splendor in a gradual, oh-so-lovely build up while the extremely familiar dhamaal, Dum ali, shines even after so many versions, in Shafqat’s lively vocals and orchestration. Rang le is a jazz interpretation of Khusrau’s very well known words – strangely, the blend works beautifully, reminding one of the music from the streets of France. Baba Bulleh Shah’s kalaam is handled astonishingly well too, with Sajid Ali’s flute adding an awe-inspiring layer in between – Shafqat’s rendition is absolutely amazing here! The Sindhi folk inspired Pagalpan is one track that belies its folk roots in the uncomfortable arrangements but the singer’s version of Zahida Parveen’s kaafi song, Rohi, is a very interesting blend between its traditional origins and modern backgrounds. The somber Manqabat showcases Shafqat’s trained vocal skills in full glory, but the majestic orchestration in the darbaari-based Kartar is astounding; clearly the high point of this album. Tabeer is an extraordinary solo debut from Shafqat – one that surpasses his Fuzon and Mitwa phases.

break for you. We are talking about ‘Hari Puttar’, a kiddie film all set to be released on 19th September 2008. Apart from the child artistes Zain Khan and Swini Khara, the movie also has stars like Sarika, Jackie Shroff, Saurabh Shukla, Vijay Raa and Lillete Dubey. It has been directed by Rajesh Bajaj and Lucky Kohli, with Guru Sharma and Aadesh Shrivastava being the music directors and Sameer, the lyricist. The joy of the two cousins, however, is short lived. Unknown to them, Kali Mirchi – a notorious don, sends two clumsy burglars (Saurabh Shukla & Vijay Raaz) to steal the secret formula chip from the house. Merely by accident, Hari comes to know of this and, along with his cousin Tuk Tuk, makes a plan to save the chip. What follows is a hilarious sequence of events, in which Hari tries to outwit the burglars. In the meanwhile, Hari’s mother, realizing her mistake, returns to her house, midway through the journey. As she comes back, she finds her son, not a naïve boy, but a hero who has captured the burglars who tried to rob his house.

Rock On rocks! Critics have given it rave reviews, aficionados are singing its praises. Despite being tagged as a “gap filler” and an average pre-release response at the advance booking counter, Farhan Akhtar’s acting-singing debut Rock On strikes gold at the box office.
Ramadan is supposed to be a month for average films or “gap fillers” and movies released during this period are not expected to bring big business, according to trade experts. But Rock On breaks the mould.
“It is a fabulous film and opened well on the first day. Both critics and the audience liked the film. It has seen 100 percent growth on the second day,” Tusshar Dhingra, COO, Adlabs, told IANS on phone from Mumbai.
“The movie has ‘strong legs’ as we call in our trade to stay for around the next four weeks. It has a clear run too as there are no other big releases scheduled for the next one month,” he added.
After starting his career with dud directorial debut Aryan, Abhishek Kapoor has churned out a crowd-pleaser in Rock On. A thoroughly entertaining film about rock ‘n’ roll, it has terrific performances from a cast of three newcomers – Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai and Nicolette Bird.
Set in Mumbai, the film has an urban feel and revolves around a group of four aspiring musicians who form a hippie rock band called Magic. It is led by singer Aditya (Farhan) and also has temperamental guitarist Joe Mascarenhas (Arjun Rampal), talented keyboard player Rob (Luke Kenny) and drummer Kedar Zaveri (Purab Kohli).
Farhan is a casting coup as the long haired rock musician – he effortlessly gets under the skin of his character and convincingly portrays the role of an inherently gifted singer. TV actress Prachi Desai looks perfect in the role of his sophisticated and caring wife who leaves no stone unturned to bring joy and happiness to her husband’s mechanical life. She is also instrumental in bringing the four friends together. In short, Prachi makes a successful transition from small to big screen with Rock On.
However, Arjun is the scene stealer in the film and strikes a chord with audiences as a failed guitarist. Critics have lauded his work.
Commenting upon Arjun’s acting in the film, Anupama Chopra, consulting editor, films, NDTV, said: “For me it is the real revelation of Arjun Rampal vis-à-vis others in the film. This is his best role till date. He has really evolved as an actor.”
Talented Shahana Goswami matches Arjun’s performance in the film. Her dynamic and spontaneous acting as his ‘slogging’ wife impresses. Luke Kenny, Purab Kohli and Koel Purie too have played their parts with conviction.
“All the actors are so elated to be loved as a group in the film. They are new actors in the industry and nobody is a star son; so it is a great feeling for them,” Kapoor said.
The film has a Dil Chahta Hai undercurrent, but Kapoor denies it.
He said: “As a story, screenplay and plot, it has nothing similar to Dil Chahta Hai. However, what can be said to be similar in both the films is that both are progressive in their approach and break from the regular mould and give the same feeling.
“In fact, I’m flattered if people feel the same way because Dil Chahta Hai is a cult classic. I’m totally overwhelmed by the reaction of the audience.”
The film, however, lacks universal approach because of its urban shades.
“It’s not a pan-India film. It’ll connect well with a certain slice of the urban audience and work well in the multiplexes. But for a small town audience, it might not do well because the audience might find it hard to associate with a rock band,” Chopra said.
But the director is not complaining because Rock On has been received well in big cities. Following the success of the film, they have bigger plans – the cast of Rock On is set to jam in the capital September 6.
“I can’t wait for the concert in Delhi with live performances from Farhan and Arjun. There is going to be a lot of singing happening,” Kapoor said.
The film’s success can be measured from the fact that the September issue of the popular music magazine Rolling Stone features Farhan, Arjun, Luke, Purab and composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy on the cover page.
The only Indian musician who featured before on the Rolling Stone cover was A.R. Rahman.
‘Tahaan’ – is a fable-like journey of the eponymous eight-year-old boy, whose life revolves around the pursuit to find real purpose in his little world.
Tahaan (Purav Bhandara) lives with his grandfather (Victor Banerjee), his mother Haba (Sarika) and older sister Zoya (Sana Shaikh,) in the serene meadows of Kashmir. They all live in the hope that someday Tahaan’s father, who’s been missing for over three years, will return.
The death of his grandfather leads the local moneylender Lalaji and
his manager Kuka (Rahul Khanna) to take away the assets of the family, including their pet donkey Birbal, against repayment of a pending loan. Now, life for Tahaan is his pastures. For Tahaan, bringing his favourite donkey Birbal back home becomes the sole purpose in life.
After various efforts at money-making, Tahaan approaches Lalaji with the prospect of regaining his lost asset but is devastated to learn that an old man Subhan Darr (Anupam Kher) has bought Birbal and taken him across the mountains… the same mountains from where Tahaan’s father never returned.
But Tahaan sums up courage and chases after Subhan. The prophetic old man doesn’t befriend Tahaan at first sight but slowly warms up to this energetic and determined soul whose love for Birbal is paramount. But at the end of the journey, Tahaan is further disheartened when Subhan gifts Birbal to his orphaned eight-year-old nephew, and even the long-time helper of Subhan called Zafar (Rahul Bose), cannot be of any assistance to poor Tahaan. On his way back home, Tahaan finally encounters a teenage lad ldrees, who convinces him that his efforts would never be sufficient to get Birbal back. Instead, he promises to get Birbal back for a favors. All Tahaan will have to do is carry a package across the mountains on his next journey. Seeing Tahaan’s eagerness, ldrees hands him a grenade. He tells him that when the time is right he will be told what is to be done.
Tahaan sets off on his second journey with Subhan and Zafar, the grenade and package tucked away under Birbal’s saddle. What is the price that Tahaan will have to pay for Birbal? And how far will he go to save his only meaning in life?
Tahaan is now at a crossroad where his ultimate decision would determine his fate… “Will he get Birbal back?”
